Hello! I have been diagnosed with otosclerosis, after I had noticed some hearing impairment. I have decided to go for stapendectomy, and am curious about what I can expect after the surgery. All info welcome! Thx

Hi! Most patients go home the evening or the morning after the surgery was done. You may expirence some dizziness for the first couple of days. You won’t notice hearing improvement a couple of days after the surgery, as some packing is places in the ear canal during the surgery. You will notice an improvement in hearing after the initial healing stage (4-6 weeks). Hearing continues to improve for months. It may happen that for the taste sensation to be altered for several weeks or months following the stapedectomy operation because a small taste nerve is passing through the ear. Complications are quite rare but contact your doctor if you have problems with hearing loss, pain, dizziness, or any new symptom related to the operated ear. Good luck!

te] :I have had this surgerg three times. I was almost deaf. Thanks to Shea Clinic in Memphis, TN and Dr. Emmett, and have my hearing, again.
The results are immediate. I could hear as soon as I woke up, and the dr. tapped my ear. I could hear thru all the cotton. Recovery took 6-8 weeks. On the third day, however, I experience the worst migraine. I think it was the body trying to reject the artificial bone. Do not try to lift, or clean or go back to work, too soon. The world is a very noisy place and you are not used to that. You will get sick.
Good luck.

I had a stapendectomy approximately 3 weeks ago and my hearing doesn't seem to be any better. My doctor performed a hearing test a week after surgery and he said that there was significant improvement. I am hoping that it gets better with time. The surgery was pretty much painless. The pain was from the small piece of fatty tissue that was removed from the earlobe for the prosthetic. Recovery time is about 4 to 6 weeks because of the delicate nature of the surgery which includes reattaching your eardrum once the bone have been replaced. After the surgery, you must lie flat on your back for at least 48 hours. I was only allowed to get up to the restroom. I could not drive and I am still unable to do any lifting. If you must sneeze or cough, you must do so with your mouth open to keep from straining and causing pressure to the eardrum and the implanted device.

I had this surgery performed approximately 3 weeks ago and I have not yet noticed any significant improvement in my hearing. I had a hearing test performed about a week after the surgery and the doctor said there was significant improvement. The surgery is very delicate in nature therefore for 48 hours afterwards, you are to lay flat on you back and I was only allowed to go to the restroom. I was unable to drive for a week. The device that is implanted into the ear is very small. Once the device is implanted, the doctor reattaches the eardrum. You won't be able to do any lifting and coughing and sneezing must be done with your mouth open to keep from straining or causing pressure to the area. Also, you are not to blow your nose. Recovery time is approximately 4 to 6 weeks. The surgery is relatively painless. I experienced no dizziness, headaches or anything of that nature.

I have had a stapendectomy on 4/11/07 and have noticed improved hearing but the ringing is perhaps louder than pre-op. I'm wondering if this might improve?

I just had my 3rd ear surgery; 2 reconstructive eardrum sx on the right and 5 days ago, a stapendectomy on the left. The post op pain for me was pretty bad but after a final dose of morphine, it was contained(thank goodness for drugs). As i said, today is the 5th day, and i am just starting to hear things ocassionally, there is alot of fluid still in there i can tell. yesterday i started holding my phone up to each ear, and it was dead silence yesterday and today i can hear the tone vaguely. I had 70% hearing loss in that ear, so i had to take a chance(im a nurse) and i was afraid that if someone found out i couldn t hear that well i could loose my job. Good luck to anyone who is about to go through it, or recently has...

Anyone had complications due to having a cold a week after this surgery? I am coughing, sneezing and have a post nasal drip. As much as I try to sneeze with open mouth, I am concerned I am going to screw it up.

Also, I had this done 1 1/2 weeks ago and have had the canal cleaned just once, I still can't hear much (worse than before even!) is this normal?

Help!
