Hello. I'm 22 year old female and I'm really worried for my mother. Just recently she has noticed that she is gaining weight more then ever. She also experienced also some fatigue problems and this made her visit her doctor. Her GP sent her to some endocrinologist which determined that she has developed this small cancerous mass in her thyroid gland. Doctor told me that probably the best thing would be an operation although presence of cancer still isn’t confirmed. Supposedly, the cut would go through the small sternothyroid muscle and that’s all. What should we do? Is this sternothyroid muscle important? Could she suffer because this muscle would be cut?
I was thinking about it and I still think that you should definitely do what your doctors are telling you.
Like they say- although it still isn’t a cancer- probably the best thing to do would be to remove this bump.
It has big cancerous potential and I wouldn’t risk if I was on your place. You shouldn’t worry about the muscle.
Sternothyroid muscle connects your sternum and hyoid bone which is located deep under your throat. It moves the hyoid bone during speech, breathing or eating.
The muscle fibers have vertical direction and operation cut just goes between these fibers not cutting any of them.
