Ok I must be very unlucky. Nearly a year and a half ago I was a normal lady of 35. I caught a virus from where I don't know. Got rushed to hospital had pluracy and could hardly breathe. After 6 weeks in hospital I came out to be rushed back in at 4am with severe constipation. My bowel had to be evacuated. I was then on fletchers enema's and picolax. I then got a huge lump in my throat which turned out to be a multi-nodule goiter. Had a total thiroidectomy. 5 months passed but my bowel movements got less and less and every month I was admitted to hospital to be emptied as could not empty bowels using any laxatives or enemas. Last February I had a sub-total colonectomy which went well. Bowel movements were up to 6-8 times a day. I gained weight which didn't make sense. I have a vitamin b12 injections which don't seem to last as get extremely tired, so are now every 8 weeks. I get very irratable and doubt myself, when I argue as don't know if partner at fault, or my thiroid or im so tired....or just life!!! I know I should be happy im alive and I am...honest i have so much to live for as getting married this year and have 2 beautiful children. I now have started to get pains in my tummy and pain when empty my bowel. I also have noticed not digesting all food....has anyone had any of the illnesses I have and can give me hope there is a light at the end of a very long tunnel!!!!...xx

wow! well this may sound dumb but could you reply with what your normal diet would include. To see it that may have anything to do with the problem. we can talk about the bowl movements after that.

The weight gain is classic of having your thyroid removed. Thyoxine is the hormone that controls metabolism, energy levels and weight too. so no thyoxine means low metabolism and energy levels. The other reasion could be because the weight might be fluid from odema, being post surgry.
The digested food problem is easily explained by the 6-8 bowl movements a day. that is a lot. The food might not have enough time to be digested. the normal person is to deficate 300grams a day. or 2-3 bowl movements. IF that is not the case
after bowl surgry having inflamed bowl with bacterial infection can cause food to not be digested. the whole bowl thing could just be related to diet, exercise and water intake and don't forget magnesium.

Hi thanks for the information. Things have changed a bit now bowel movements have slowed down completely and I have gone back to hospital. Had barium enema that showed that my bowel is very slow and gone back to being lazy which I was warned might happen. I still have pain but am hoping that is just scarring but had the op 18 months ago.

As for the thiroid i am on the right amount of thiroxin.

They have increased my vit b12 to monthly so not so tired...

Still not losing weight though!!! Hey but at least im alive. Getting married this month in Hawaii ..... Very Happy
