sudden horrible and painful headaches!! help plz!

hi! my boyfriend recently experienced a sudden horrible headache. he was on the floor in pain and said that his head felt like it was going to explode. he took an advil and went to bed. he woke up a few hours later and was fine. it worries me because he's often telling me about headaches and i dont think its normal. i suggested he goes to see an accupunctrist because i know that some are very good at curing things like this but he is a student and can't afford it right now.

has anyone ever felt something like this or knows what it is or what it is caused by? does anyone have advice on how to prevent these headaches or make them stop once you get them?
