I have suffered from superficial thrombophlebitis for 8 months .(july2006) after a fall and a small break in my left hand. After the cast was removed a ST developed and was treated with anti inflamatory medicine for 2 months. A second St developed in my right lower leg 2 months later confirmed by doppler. I was referred to a vascular surgeon and had numerous tests including mammogram, chest xray, blood tests, ultra sounds on chest and abdomen.looking for a possible cause. Yet the ST did not improve..I began experiencing shortness of breath 2 months ago and was referred for a CT which indicated DVT in the lung and iliac vein . A subsequent PET scan has not revealed any cancer. I began treatment on clexane in December for the St (prior to the discovery of the DVT) my ST symptoms did not seem to improve and maybe got worse hence the CT in January . I was immediately put on Warfarin for the DVT now in my 3rd week yet I still have the ST symptoms in both my l/arm and r/leg.
My mother who had knee surgery (1989) developed a serious blood clotting problem immediately after injections of heparin at the time and became dangerously ill and remained hospitalised for 5 weeks . She was later treated with Warfarin and recovered. I remember it being said at the time that her blood went like treacle . She passed away 5 years later with cancer of the liver and bowel. As no tests so far can reveal the cause of my problems (I am female 61 yrs and have been healthy all my life)I wonder whether it is possible to have some genetic connection and could the clexane caused the DVT. My specialist says no. Have you any suggestions as to where I should go from here or whether it could have a genetic connection.
Regards,
Patricia White
