Why do only men have Adam's apples, I don’t even know what an Adam’s apple is? Is it a bone, or some sort of cartilage formation? What is the function of it? I think that mine is swollen a little. I don’t know what I should do? Does it happen?
The Adam’s apple is a piece of cartilage that makes up part of the larynx. During puberty, a male's vocal cords become significantly longer, allowing his voice to become deeper. These new, longer cords require a larger container so the larynx also grows to accommodate them and a woman, by contrast, generally doesn't develop an Adam's apple, since the female voice tends to remain relatively high. How do you mean swollen, like larger or swollen-inflamed? I think when it gets larger it can actually indicate a "minor" medical issue. Like shortage of a certain vitamin or excess of a certain mineral. Anyway seek for medical attention if you think that your Adam apple is swollen.
