I started treatment with Synthroid recently. I have been on different treatments for my congenital hyperthyroidism. I don’t know much about this drug. Can someone tell me what happen if I overdose and what if I miss the dose? I work a lot and sometimes I forget to take medicine and again I am not sure sometimes if I took it twice. Please give me some information.

In case that you suspect that you overdosed yourself with Synthroid seek medical attention. Symptoms in case you overdose include: pain, nervousness, trouble sleeping, tremor, rapid heartbeat, nausea, headache, fever, sweating, shortness of breath, heat intolerance, increased appetite, decreased weight, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. And in time when you forget to take dose just take another one when it is time for but do not take double.

Hi Petra,

Zora answered your questions quite nicely. Thank you Zora.

I just wanted to let you know that I have been taking synthroid for 10 years and do well with it. It would be a good idea if you could get on some sort of a regular regimen in regards to when you take it.

As you probably already know, it should be taken on an empty stomach, so in the morning, first thing, is a good time. It makes it easier to remember to take it at this time also.

Try to take it with a big glass of water, and do not eat for at least one hour after taking your medication. And make sure that you do not ingest any calcium at least 4 hours after you take it. And wait until later in the day before taking your multi-vitramin, especially if it has zinc in it. Certain supplements contain counter-actives that inferfere with the thyroid medication and its function.

Also, stay away from soy and soy products. Studies have shown that soy inhibits thyroid function and medications. I found out the hard way.

If you wish any other info on hypothyroidism, please let me know, I am an old hand at this.

I wish you good health.
