taking prometrium but not estrogen?

I had normal periods up until about 2 yr ago, during which they came sometimes 3 wks apart and as much as 2 months apart. But no unusual amount of bleeding. But now it has been 3 months and the dr. put me on prometrium, she said to make me have a period, my uterine lining was way to thick. I am suppossed to take it 10 days per month. Is it normal to take progestrium without estrogen? I am 49 yr. old.
