thick brown discharge before my period

I have been on birth control for several years now, probably 5 - I am 22 and got a thick brown discharge a couple days before my period, which I did get and still have but it is a mix of this really thick dark blood and regular blood? What could be wrong?

This has been happening to me since June of last year. I asked my doctor about it and she said it was normal. Just freaked me out a little because it had never happened before. It's always good to ask your doctor though but I don't think you have anything to worry about.
