My daughter had problem with sore throat, fever and headaches, when we decided to take her to the doctor. He realized she is worst then we thought and recommended her tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy. I want to hear more about these procedures for children, because my daughter is only 7 years old. What actually means tonsillitis and adenoiditis, when it is recommended for children to have tonsillectomy and adeinoidectomy?

The tonsils are small, round pieces of tissue that are located in the back of the mouth, on the side of throat. Tonsils are thought to help fight infections by producing antibodies, and tonsillitis occurs when the tonsils become inflamed from infection. Adenoids are similar to the tonsils, they are made up of lymph tissue, and adenoiditis refers to condition when adenoids become inflamed from infection. The reasons for tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy surgery at children are not well defined, and many surgeons differ in their views. Some of the more widely accepted reasons for having this kind of surgery is when child have problems such as sleep apnea, or periods at night when your child stops breathing, trouble swallowing, or bleeding from the tonsils that cannot be stopped. Beside this, significant blockage of the nasal passage, uncomfortable breathing, seven sore throats in one year, five sore throats in each of two years, and three sore throats in each of three years are conditions where surgery is recommended. Some children have large tonsils, but tonsils will decrease in size after the ages of 8 to 12 years, and this is not a reason to remove the tonsils. Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy (T&A) surgery is the most common major surgery performed on children each year. The need for a T&A for your child will be determined by your child's ear, nose, and throat surgeon and discussed with you before surgery is performed.
