Lymph Nodes generally act as a first line in defense against diseases and infections. Whenever a foreign body or a microorganism enters the body, these glands filter the lymph fluid and try to destroy the intruders and abnormal cells.
Lymph nodes swell in the area where the infection occurs. They get swollen when they start fighting and they can also be painful. They also get swollen and painful when an abscess forms or malignancy.
If you have a swollen and painful lymph node that doesn’t go away in 4 weeks and you don’t have a flu or a cold or some kind of an infection, you should show it to a doctor.
They will press on them to feel their size, warmth, texture, shape, mobility, etc
Usually lymph nodes become tender upon touching but if they are painful without touching, it means they have swollen more.
If you are very worried about the swelling, you should see your GP who will be able to tell why the nodes swell.
