I can't see how it could make anything worse, and to me it's worth a shot. |
Any update on how your surgery went and if it's helped your problem? |

| I have been a tonsil-stone sufferer for over twenty years and have done some bizarre things to get rid of them, but they keep returning. I gargled with peroxide, brushed my tongue and finally resorted to a bi-weekly tonsil cleaning with a dental pick that had been smoothed down. It took some time to perfect my method, but now I have almost perfect control of my gag reflex and can get the often pea-sized stones out of my tonsils. I have to do this regularly or my breath starts to get funky. I tried the sinus drops and oxyhenation methos, but brushing my tongue twice daily and using my pick have been the only reliable ways to deter the growth of those stinky things. Having bad sinuses and allergies is the root cause, in my estimation, as is being a side sleeper. My right tonsil is the one most likely to get tonsil stones. |

| I also have "tonsil stones". As a teenager I would have tonsilitis quit often. I always have drainage in the back of my throat, and am constantly trying to swallow it so as not to clear my throat aloud. About 3 years ago I started coughing out these tonsil stones afte brushing my teeth. I thought it might be because I quit smoking. But they have only became worse with time. I can see 2-3 on my tonsils at a time, and often can smell the odor on my breath myself. I wonder if this problem has something to do with the constant drainage, as many of you have mentioned. I believe I read somewhere that your white blood cells are incasing the debri in those crypts and then they become the hard yellow balls. Somebody help! |

It is not just in my head (which one doctor actually offerred as her only solution) because sometimes it is very difficult to speak unless I clear my throat; however, nothing comes up or moves. I have tried nexium and flonase and neither seem to do the trick. I think they helped a little but then symptoms just returned as normal. I am not doing a lot of sinus rinsing. This is proved helpful but has surfaced another problem, tonsilloliths or tonsil stones as they are commonly referred to. I am wondering if my throat clearing is do to these tonsil stones. My tonsil are far back in my throat. I can just barely see them when I look in the mirror. Also, my tonsil stones are out of site. I have never seen one actually stuck in my tonsil. Most of the time they shoot out after a sneeze, which usually occurs not long after a sinus rinse. I have noticed a distinct bad breath, probably due to the tonsil stones but I am not entirely sure it is not coming from my sinus cavity.
The main question I have is, is anyone else experiencing this throat clearing problem who is also suffering from tonsil stones. I usually do not feel anything back there, I just feel the need to clear my throat--usually very unproductive clearing. |

Hey,
From what I can remember this started for me when I was in about the 9th grade I would say, I'm now a freshman in college and can say that it has gotten significantly better. The things that I've done to improve it are literally force myself not to hack anything up even if that means about to throw up or gagging through it and as i did that more and more I noticed that it got easier and easier and the symptoms less and less. My method for this was alternating breathing between the mouth and the nose until i could finally have relief from the constant hacking. The next method of things to do is definantly try what someone had posted earlier which is to drink water every time you feel like clearing your throat and within three weeks the symptoms should be gone. I also have been taking a mushroom that cleans the body of toxins and I have noticed my symptoms have gotten a lot less worse from that. My new goal is to completely alleviate them when I exercise and after I eat a very large meal. I will keep in touch and urge others to try what I have done, it will get better trust me..
If anyone is interested they can reach me on my e-mail rydir8910@gmail.com just leave throat clearing in the subject line so I know it isn't spam. |

Posted: 09/08/08 - 11:56 Post subject: Tonsilloliths & Post Nasal Drip |
|
|
I realize this is an old post. For what it's worth, if you clear your throat a lot, you probably have post nasal drip. If you have post nasal drip and crytic tonsils, the mucous from the drip is most likely getting into the crypts and contributing to the tonsillitis (the horrible stuff in your tonsil).
This is kind of gross, but I clean my tonsils with a water pic when I can. Sometimes there's nothing, sometimes there are tonsillitis, and sometimes there's just mucous from the post-nasal-drip. I don't think the drip is inside the crypt, it may be lodged behind the tonsil but since I can't see it, I don't know.
In any case, this is the relationship between throat-clearing and formation of tonsillitis, at least in most cases. |
