After conducting a 25 year old study with 2,400 men aged between 45 and 59, British scientists have found that the intake of approximately half a liter of milk daily can keep the heart healthy and protect it against serious conditions such as heart disease, stroke and type-2 diabetes.

One in six of the study participants were diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. Also called insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome affects the body's metabolism by increasing cholesterol, blood glucose levels, body fat (especially around waist) and blood pressure and puts sufferers at risk of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

All study participants were supposed to fill in a food questionnaire, keep their weekly food diaries and follow the amount of dairy products they ate.

The study results showed that those men who just drank half a liter of milk daily had 62% less chances of developing the syndrome while those who ate other dairy foods had 56% less chances. Regular consumption of any type of milk, yoghurt and cheese was found to cut the chances of developing metabolic syndrome by half.

While previous studies expressed concerns about the milk’s high saturated fat content and it’s possibly negative impact on the heart, the new findings showed that there is no doubt of the benefits of milk and diary products’ consumption on the heart and vascular diseases.
