a calorie (technically, a kilocalorie = kcal) is a unit of energy.

in nutrition, it is the term used for the amount of energy that you get from digested food like carbohydrates (including fiber), dietary fats, proteins, and alcohol. you do not get it from water, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, caffeine, spices, and natural flavors.

physics has a different definition but i don't think you're interested in this.

calorie management is key to weight management. unguided or misguided people typically reduce the amount of food instead of changing the quality of food they eat.

of course, in overall health, calories and nutrition should go hand in hand.
