Hi WannaLose,

Yep, I’ve heard about Yerba Mate. It’s used mostly for herbal tea. It’s traditional herbal ingredient for so called Mate Tea in South America. It is a shrub or small tree growing to 15 m tall. The leaves are evergreen, 7–11 cm long and 3–5.5 cm broad, with a serrated margin. The flowers are small, greenish-white, with four petals. The fruit is a red berry 4–6 mm diameter (picture below).

Literary Yerba Mate means "a cup of herb". The plant is grown mainly in south parts of South America (Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina and south Brazil).

Yerba Mate is consisted from:
Xanthines – alkaloid relative to chemicals that are made by plants and have nitrogen in them) similar to caffeine or theobromine which are present in common coffe, tea or chocolate.
Potassium - A metallic element that is important in body functions such as regulation of blood pressure and of water content in cells, transmission of nerve impulses, digestion, muscle contraction, and heartbeat.
Magnesium - An essential Blood salt. Necessary for nerve function.
Manganese - An essential trace mineral that is required in small amounts to manufacture enzymes necessary for the metabolism of proteins and fat. It also supports the immune system, blood sugar balance, and is involved in the production of cellular energy, reproduction and bone growth.

The yerba mate is marked in some countries as alternative to coffee and tea, with fewer negative side effects reported in some personal experiences like:
    mental state of wakefulness
    anxiety
    diarrhea
    "jitteriness"
    heart palpitations

In other words, yerba mate is just another stimulant which could possible through caffeine-like chemicals suppress your appetite, but also lead to gastrointestinal disorders and side effects.

You can buy grounded yerba mate with stem (pic below) in almost every South American herbal store, also in States too.

Hope this helps!

Take care!
