Hello! I am a woman in my mid 40es. I have a family history of heart failure. Lately I started experiencing problems with high blood pressure andI was prescribed Toporol. I know Toporol is a beta blocker but I would like to know what kind of drugs beta blockers are. Thank you

There are two kinds of beta-blockers. Selective and nonselective. Betablockers slow the nerve impulses that travel through the heart and when this happens a heart doesn’t have to work as hard be get more blood and oxygen. Beta blockers also slow arrhythmia by blocking the impulses. Nonselective beta blockers block both beta 1 and beta 2 receptors while selective may block beta 1 receptors more than they block beta 2 receptors.
