My mother has been suffering from epilepsy (partial seizures) for many years know. Her doctor changed her treatment to trileptal because she was experiencing side effects from other drug. I want to know if trileptal is becoming a more accepted treatment for epilepsy. Is it effective like other epilepsy medications and does it have any side effects?

Partial seizures are the most common form of seizure in adults. They are more difficult to prevent than other forms of epilepsy and are usually treated with medications. Recently, trileptal (oxcarbazepine) was approved as a monotherapy for partial seizures. “Monotherapy” means that the drug is used alone, unlike other drugs that are used in combination. trileptal is showing good results and can be taken with or without food. When it is used alone the daily dose is 2,4 grams and 1,2 grams in combination with other medications. trileptal is very safe but it is not completely free of side effects. In about 5% of patients trileptal caused dizziness, drowsiness, headache, upper respiratory infection, and nervousness. But, trileptal is not causing hair growth, weight gain, tremor, skin rash, memory problems and many other symptoms that are common with other drugs used in treatments of epilepsy.
