Hi, combination of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxasol is frequently used for urinary tract infections caused by susceptible strains of : Escherichia coli, Klebsiella species, Enterobacter species, Morganella morganii, Proteus mirabilis, and Proteus vulgaris. It will be useful only if bacteria have not developped resistance toward these antibiotics. It would be the best to perform an antibiogram, in order to check if antibiotic is effective. In some cases even combinations of antibiotics are needed, but generally it is recommended to start with a single antibiotic in uncomplicated cases.
