vaginaal soreness from semen after intercourse

This is a problem that I have had for many years, it's not everytime my husband and I have intercourse, but it is often enough to cause us worry. After intercourse and sometimes during I feel an extreme burning sensation from the discharge of his semen. We always make it a practise to shower after intercourse and due to the burning I shower with cold water on my genital area. Passing urine is also very painful straight after intercourse. My vulva area also becomes swollen as a result...HELP! what I do. Also, how common is this? Is it an allergy of some description to semen??
