Hi I am a 22 year old female. I had a baby in June 2005. I was kinda thinking that maybe I have a yeast infection or something, but it is on and around my rectum or bottom. It is really irritating. I don't know what is wrong. I have an appointment, but I am just worried what he might say. Sometimes it is really uncomfortably itchy. what is wrong?

An itchy bottom symptom is called Pruritus ani and it may have many causes. Some of them may be skin conditions including hemorrhoids or anal fissure-a crack in the anal skin that can be both painful and itchy.
Other skin conditions that may be causing the symptom may be eczema, psoriasis, or seborrhoeic dermatitis.

Anal skin may get inflamed if parts of feces are left on the skin after bowel movements, or if the area is too moist and sweaty all the time. Such condition may even contribute to fungal infections since they love moist.

You may be also having an allergic reaction to one of the products you have been using, like soaps, lotions, deodorants and you may not be dryness the anal area properly.

Also, certain diseases like renal failure, hyperthyroidism or iron deficiency anaemia may be causing general itching as well as itching in the anal area.

You could report to your doctor what kind of products you have been using and if you are taking any of the drugs because some laxatives and antibiotics may pass through the gut and leak onto the anal skin and make it itchy.
