If you have unprotected sex on the first day of your period then the chances of becoming pregnant are very low, as pregnancy occurs when the nucleus of a sperm fuses with that of an
ovum. This has to occur while the female is ovulating, and ovulation generally occurs around the 14th day of the 28 day menstrual cycle. There is still a risk of becoming pregnant, however, as many women ovulate at different times and, depending on the conditions inside the vagina (such as temperature and
pH, or acid levels), sperm can live inside the female for up to 7 days. Thus, pregnancy, while extremely rare, can occur from unprotected sex during a female's period.
