The father of my best friend was diagnosed with Multiple myeloma few months ago. I feel very sorry for him because he is a good man. I would like to know more about this condition. What causes Multiple myeloma?

Multiple myeloma is a cancer of the plasma cell. It is an incurable but treatable disease and there are several promising new therapies that are helping patients live longer, healthier lives. Multiple myeloma is also known as myeloma or plasma cell myeloma. It is a progressive hematologic disease. Basically, it is a cancer of the plasma cell, an important part of the immune system that produces immunoglobulins or antibodies. These antibodies help fight infection and disease. Multiple myeloma is characterized by excessive numbers of abnormal plasma cells in the bone marrow and overproduction of intact monoclonal immunoglobulin or Bence-Jones protein. After non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Multiple myeloma is the second most prevalent blood cancer and it represents approximately 1% of all cancers and 2% of all cancer deaths. Multiple myeloma occurs more frequently in men than women.
