Non-breastfeeding females can develop infections of the breast as well as those who are breastfeeding. Non-breastfeeding (I suppose you fall into this category, otherwise you would have mentioned it, right?) females are usually aged 20-30 and most of them smoke. It seems that smoking is related to these infections, actually ciggarrtette smoke seems to block or damage some ducts that are situated under the nipple and they become infected by bacteria most of the time.
When this condition occurs, it is called periductal mastitis and it causes all sorts of symptoms from redness and tenderness to scaliness of the skin and nipple discharge. A woman may also find a lump nearby.
Chronic infection occurs when these ducts get damaged and although infection goes away after antibiotic treatment, you get it again. If this is the case, you may need to have these ducts removed.

You may want to go view this site and the video on it to check possible other symptoms that also cause swelling of the breast. IBC is a silent killer as the cancer cells do not form a lump, but they lay in sheets within the tissue. Check out this site...
