Hello! My daughter is five years old. She has often had problems with her throat. Since she had six severe throat infections last year her doctor recommended tonsillectomy. Her tonsils are also enlarged and the doctor said that they may even create problems in her breathing. Her surgery is scheduled next week. It would be good to know what we should do before, during and after tonsillectomy.

Hello! Your daughter should not take aspirin or any other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicine ten days before the surgery. She should not eat or drink anything six hours before the surgery since that can increase the chances of an anesthetic complication. An anesthesiologist will review her medical history and monitor her throughout the procedure. The surgery is usually performed on outpatient basis. During the procedure your daughter will be continuously monitored by pulse oximeter and heart rhythm. The surgery usually takes less than one hour. When you come back home she should rest in bed with her head elevated on pillows. She should avoid hot food and liquids for few days and eat a light, soft, and cool diet. She will be prescribed antibiotics and pain relievers which she should take as prescribed. A checkup is usually made ten to fourteen days after the procedure.
