what is synthroid?

I’ve been having problems with my thyroid gland for almost 20 years, but never too serious. I am 5 week pregnant now, and my doctor told me that it is safe to take thyroid hormones during pregnancy. He recommended Synthroid (Levothyroxine). I was on a different treatment so far but he explain me that this drug is in category A in pregnancy and that is safe for me to take it. Please can someone tell me more about what is synthroid?

Synthroid is replacement to thyroid hormone when your body is not producing, or not enough. It is used to treat hyperthyroidism and to prevent and treat goiter (hormonal imbalances, radiation…). Almost anyone can take this drug, but it should not be taken if you have other hormonal problems that are not being adequately treated. Synthroid is in the FDA pregnancy category A, so it is safe as they told you. It is also safe to take while you breast-feeding baby, it pass into breast milk but is no harmful to a nursing infant.
