why do girls have periods

Hello. I'm 14 year old female and I'm very interested to find out some information about females and menstrual periods.
You see, I have a sister which is three years older then me and she is fighting a real battle with pain every month on the same day. She suffers from strong abdominal pain and mood swings.
It last for about three or four days and than-everything goes back like it was before!
My mother told me that it is normal and that it is caused by her menstrual periods. Does every woman gets these periods and is there anything I could do to relieve my symptoms when the time comes?

Well, I'm 24 year old female and I'm battling with these periods for almost a decade. You see, don’t you worry about this.
Every woman must get these periods and it happens in most cases in 14th or 15th year. Period is accompanied with mild abdominal pain, mood swings and vaginal bleeding that lasts from 3 to 8 days, sometimes even longer. Period means that egg cell produced by female’s ovaries is not fertilized by spermatozoid and that she is being expelled because of it.
Not all women experience the same symptoms. Some suffer like hell and some don’t feel a thing. It all lasts till menopause which happens in late forties or fifties. Good luck!
