I woke up this morning and over half of my eyelashes on my upper right eyelid were completely gone. My eye was irritated last night, and I was rubbing my eye. But never did I expect to see my eyes this morning? Please help. Will my eyelashes grow back? And how long will it take if they do?

You need to see a doctor and determine what happened. You don’t see this happening every day, do you?
There is a disease called Alopecia areata that causes hair loss, both on scalp and other body parts. Hairs that fell off due to this disease can re-grow and eyelashes can also re-grow but it is a long process because these are the slowest growing hair follicles.
Once they have re-grown, they may be more brittle, which may in return lead to their loss again. It is important you wore eyeglasses and protected them from the sun.

its called trichotillomania. i have it. its an addiction, much like cutting. i didnt know it was common when i first started, and my mother dismissed it as a phase. before i knew it i couldnt stop. pulling out the eyelashes at the corners of my lids turned to pulling out all of my eyelashes and eyebrows. the sooner your child learns to control this, the better the chances are that there wont be permanent damage and that the urge will go away.

i am getting better, though i am not recovered and its tough. they take about a month to start growing back, and wont reach full length till about 2.5 months go by. i am 16 and very good at make up, so no one notices when i wear fake eyelashes or eyeliner.

PostPosted: 09/05/07 - 22:13    Post subject: Growing them out! Reply with quote

I've been pulling my eyelashes and eyebrows for almost 15 years of my life! I have gone through everything, therapy, at home treatments, trying to keep my hands busy, and just trying to stop cold turkey. Well a couple years ago I just got so fed up with putting on fake eyelashes and drawing on my eyebrows so I decided to quit. My doctor recommended an Anti-depressant, apparently those help with what is going on in our brains. Well I stopped, I grew my eyelashes and eyebrows out and holy cow was it hard! I still have my eyelashes but I pulled all my eyebrows out... So now I am at it again, except this time I am doing it cold turkey. I haven't pulled them for going on 10 days and I am seeing great results. I have so many hairs poking out! Everyone says it takes a long time for them to grow back, but I am seeing so many, I'm sure I will be splotchy for a long time, but I don't mind! It just got to that point where I don't want to do it anymore... I hope you all can overcome this! GOOD LUCK!!!

PostPosted: 11/01/07 - 20:07    Post subject: A little about me but overall message is that there truly is Reply with quote

Wink Well i've never replied on anything on the web before but i figured that since i'm not alone with trichotillomania then i should let people know that there is hope, there truly is. i've had this problem since i was in fourth grade about 10 years old and i'm 15 and still have it also i'm a girl. i, like many people, hide it by make up. i do both my eyes and my brows and cover it by eyeliner and a brow pencil, but as of today i have stopped cold turkey for a week and for me and i'm sure most others, that is quite long and for me it's been really hard. i had gotten help for a few months but it didn't help me like i had hoped it would. this habit has really hurt my self-condidence and has really made my life rough at times. i want to say though that i know that the reason that i've have been able to show more self-control when it's tempting is because i have been reading my bible every day and i am becoming closer to God and am relying on him to help me get through this and there has been a lot of improvement and most importantly HAIRS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! God has really help me and i owe my sucess ALL to Him and to Him only. i know that if you're reading this you may be thinking that i'm some stupid, bible-shoving-down-your-throat person but i'm not and plus it's your choice to finish reading this but i wish that you would. please give the Lord a chance to work in your life and when you read the bible read with a heart that's open and wants to read to grow closer to God so he can help you with not only trichotillomania but with all life's problems and please remember that the bible says that the Lord works in mysterious ways and also remember that God answers ALL prayers but maybe not in the way that we want them answered because He knows what's best for His children! also the Lord wants you to put all your trust in Him and to be able to come to Him through prayer about anything. trust me, the Lord really does help and even when it seems like he's not there or isn't listening, he really is. so please grow closer to Him and remember things take time so don't expect to wake up and have no urges of pulling and we also need to exzert self control and the Lord can help you if you trust Him. remember the Lord always has a way for you to get out of temptation, just trust in Him!!!! may God bless you and help you!!!!!! Smile
I understand what you all are going through, and been though, it's tuff. No one seems to understand, but people who are like ourselves... Some may even think of us as weridos... But, the way i see it, if theres something wrong with the way i look, then theres something wrong witht the everyone else looks too. We aren't perfect. Nor do we need to be. I been down this road so many times... with what started as when i was a kid. And i just went on and on till my teens, and now in to my adult hood.
Well, something amazing came over me having been the new year and all.
I stop being in the dark. I quit cold turkey. I just woke up one day and said today is the day to start living my life right, to make a difference in myself. And so far it's been 3 weeks! i haven't felt the ugre or anything... and so far they are making progress, I'M making progress... I'm doing this for me, i gave myself the good positive thinking, i gave myself a chance, i gave myself faith, i believed in myself, and motivated myself, and it has helped me to be where i am at today right now.

Another thing is that i picked at my hair. Nw, this isnt the first time, ofcourse when i started i was in 5th grd. and it went on till i hit 8th. but then agian something amazing came over me, and i stoped cold turkey. my hair grew back after a few nice cuts, and finally with the last one. i didn't need anymore... and man were the girls in high school jelouse of ME! i was a hottie. it has been 10 yrs. but now, i must admit, that i had a relaps, and it's been a yr since i been doing it. so, i have to wear my hair in a pony tail, and even though it looks cute up in a pony tail, i would like to leave it down at times too. Tell you what, lets do this togther, today is the day that i am stopping now, for good, for life. NO MORE! and you know what? I am going to do it too.
i will keep in touch to let you all know whats going on.

take care..

Hey! I am 12 years old and I don't know if I have trichotillomania or not, but, one day in the first grade, a friend and my Mom told me that if you have an eyelash out, you can make a wish on it, so, I pulled bit by bit and now, there are SPLOTCHES on my eyebrows. I want them to grow back REALLY quickly! Like, now. I am addicted to pulling my eyelash and eyebrow hair out. Now, how do I keep my hands busy and accept who I am without feeling down or bored, or ugly? Please help! Send me a reply to lilastar00@aim.com if you can help me at all, and/or give me suggestions and encouragement. Thanks!

PostPosted: 02/22/08 - 09:50    Post subject: my eyelashes are gone. Reply with quote

when i was younger i remember pulling at them a little because they itched... but i never can truly remember pulling ALL of them out. from time to time they still bother me and sometimes they STILL itch but i try to not yank at them.

this started when i was in 4th grade and now i am a sophomore in high school. i'm really getting sick of this no-eyelashes-problem because honestly i am not an ugly girl, and if i had eyelashes i'm sure i would look a lot better. though i do hide my flaw with makeup, it's really getting old and i can't take it anymore!

i went to the dermatologist when i was in 6th grade and they didn't help. i'm thinking of going back and consulting with them to better fix this problem, but i have been using this stuff called "TALIKA" and it makes your eyelashes and eyebrows grow! (supposedly if you use it for 30 days, twice a day.) however i really haven't seen a difference in my eyes yet so..

i have gone through a lot in my life (though yes, i am only a "child") so i'm assuming stress could be a factor, or i've been hearing about this alopecia disease. if anyone has any advice or answers please feel free to contact me.
