stoped taking birthcontrol now im bleeding right after i jus

i have been on birth control for 3 years now and i decided to stop taking it for a wile. after i got off of it (right when my period was over) about a week later i started bleeding again with a lot of blood clots and heavy flow. how long will this go on for? and why is it happening?
