Hello! My father felt unusual pain in his neck last week. His neck became inflexible and he felt weakness in his arms. He didn't have any sort of head injury or neck and he really didn't know what could be the cause. He went to see his doctor and the doctor asked him to perform certain movements and to report if the pain in his neck is decreased or increased in certain positions. Then he did the x-rays at radiologist and his doctor said that the pain was most probably caused by cervical degenerative disc disease. He prescribed some pain relievers and advised him to see a physician or a chiropractor. Would chiropractic therapy be effective with cervical degenerative disc disease?

Hi! Cervical disc degeneration is usually the cause of the neck pain. Most patients feel low-grade pain, stiff or inflexible neck, numbness or even weakness in arms or shoulders. The exam performed by your father's doctor is the usual one. Some patients apply ice or heat, use pain and inflammation relievers and do exercises to relieve stiffness of neck and shoulders. Set of specific exercises is usually done by a physician. Chiropractic manipulation is also useful since it helps patients to extend the neck and shoulders and increase the disc space in the affected segment. Sometimes the use of cervical collar or a pillow could be useful since it stabilizes the neck while sleeping or relaxing at home. I think chiropractic therapy could be useful, but I would recommend it in combination with conservative care.
