Took a first response test and was negative

After using birth control pills for like a year and a half, then stopped for 3 month then after having sex the 30 of the month got extremley light period and became brownish stains.. Then the 8 th of that staining got heavy bleeding.. Took a first response test and was negative.. What can it be??
