Clhamydia-How long can you have this?

My husband was recently diagnosed with Chlamydia and saying he has been faithful that this must be something he contracted 10 years ago. He had never been to a Doctor until recently for a full check up. Is this true? Can you have this infection for 10 years and not know it???
