I have been using Whey protein on and off for about a year as new fitness enthusiast , I had done my research and decided to stick with basic and something which suited my student budget , here are the ingredients on my 4KG pack :
- Undenatured Whey protein isolate
-Soy Lecithin (bit blurred not sure if that is correct spelling, or if this ingredient only applies to the flavored options of this product, I got the basic unflavored one)
It does have warning on pack which was not online: Contains Milk, Soy, Lactose, Sunset yellow, quinoline yellow & ceramoisine may have adverse effects on activity and attention in children (again not sure if some of these ingredients online concern the flavored versions of this product).
I would be very disappointed if the consumption of this product was cause behind my drop in libido. I love to take it after workouts or spin class I really feel like it replenishes me instead of leaving feeling drained for days.
But this got me thinking that I have had much lower libido this past year. For example in bedroom I have failed to get fully errect on several occasions , even though I manage to orgasm eventually , I attributed it to nerves but even being confortable with current partner it still tends to happen once in a while. I also thought it might be due to masturbation to porn , but those habits have not fluctuated over last couple years I don't see why it would start affecting me now. I seem to lack the intoxicating excitement which I used to get for sex.
I really hope I can continue using this product :P
i saw this topic first time before 4-5 months, i had that problem with low libido and i belived it was from the whey protein, i remember it had take to me to recover and be back to normal about a month.
so 2 days ago i decide to take it again to see if it happens again, to be sure if it was the protein the cause. so i put on the blender very little amount of whey only 1/5 to 1/4 of a scoop, i made it with banana, yugart and milk and i didn't even noticed the taste of the whey. and guess what? again the same problem low libido, weak erections, no sensation on the head etc. and today I am completely limp.
I am really scared now.
Anyone who did the same mistake two times and recover? And how long it takes?
And is it possible to get that effect with only 1/5-1/4 of a scoop???
(my english are not good btw)
thanks for your response! the last 6 days i can't stop smoking because i am so nervous and so mad at me. i have thoughts like i have done permanent damage. i hope not
Yes! I was doing some more research tonight on whey protein's affect on iron blood levels. Apparently it raises blood levels of iron in some people. Last time I gave blood, my hemoglobin level (iron) was fairly high. Giving blood reduces the iron content, therefore it alleviated the symptoms.
Also, a symptom of high iron levels in males is impotence or erectile dysfunction! I think I may be on to something here...hopefully M has similar results. I will be able to donate again in April, so I will also be able to report on the effects. Although I've consumed little whey since my last appointment.
Adrian, This is some interesting stuff you have stumbled upon regarded whey increasing iron in the blood. I've since done some research and this might be a scientific reason why whey is causing these problems for some of us. Apparently Hemochromatosis is a condition where the persons iron levels are too high which can cause all kinds of problems from heart disease, cancer, diabetes, too impotence! It is very common in Northern European males genes, which I also happen to be. Maybe the reason why some of use are negatively affected by whey is because we are more pron to having Hemochromatosis, and high consumption of whey protein activates this, which eventually causes high iron levels with the negative effects of impotence etc. I need to draw blood asap, and see if this is really the culprit. Yes, unfortunately, we will have to wait until some further scientific studies to find the common denominator in all this. It's interesting that you mention that the clinic recommended to stop taking multivitamins. I took those for a while and it seemed like they affected me also in a way.
I have had no whey powder for a couple months now. I no longer have the issue with low libido, however I do still have some circulation problems which I hope will clear up after I give blood again.
By the way, M, my blood type is O+ and I give double the normal amount which is 2 pints. That's why the blood center loves me ;)
Hi Adrian and M,
I actually had time to donate blood today, and so far it feels like this is exactly what my body has wanted me to do for the last 2 years or so of feeling just bad or just blah. My iron levels weren't dangerously high, but they were high for an average male, but i think that it's the iron that gets stored in your organs is what causes the main problems in the first place. When you donate blood, your body natually taps into the stored iron in your organs, to help make the red blood cells that you just lost. This is good because accumulation of iron in the organs can cause nasty side effects that can be deadly.
I seriously haven't felt this fresh and good for a couple years and it's only been a couple hours since i donated, and I'm starting to believe excess iron is what has been my problem for the past couple years. I think whey protein and my high fat diet is what skyrocket my iron levels, and the human doesn't reduce iron levels very efficeintly, which is why blood=letting is the best technique for reducing iron.
Just my thoughts right now.

Adrian are you in the US that you can give two pints??
B where are you from??
