Hey guys,

I'm 19, and I got my thyroid removed over the past summer by radioactive iodine. I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism at 13, and it was not getting under control. So the doctor suggested getting it removed.

I have gained about 30 lbs since I got my thyroid removed. I believe this is a good thing though because I looked sickly skinny at the beginning. I currently weight 120. I feel so much better after getting my thyroid taken out. I am not as tired, I feel more energized. I do have many mood swings, and some days I do feel a bit depressed. Its difficult to say that all that is because of my thyroid though, because I am in college, and I figure that college stress may have something to do with it as well. The only big downfall to getting my thyroid removed was not being able to play soccer for my college team during the fall.

But there's my experience with getting my thyroid removed. My advice for anyone getting their thyroid taken out, don't be scared because of the latter side effects. They're much easier to control than your thyroid itself. :-). Good Luck Everyone. :-).

How is everything now after the surgery?

I have had a total removal  plus 7 other nodes that were sitting on my thyroid 2 yrs ago today and have had my doc lower my thyroxin drug 3 times. Since then I have lost over 20 lbs. but every once in a while I still get the same pain in my neck when I swallow, cough or eat. The good thing is when it was removed not cancer was found, but because of how large it had grown and the ramped cancer in my family I'm not out of the woods yet. My cancer doc told me that I still have the potential of getting cancer in another form. I still see my docs regularly and always ask questions. I'm trying to keep healthy but the depression, fatigue, mood swings kinda keep me down. But my family is there for me when I need them. Which is always the high light of my bad days. So ladies keep your head up and know that you are not alone.

Two years ago, I had 60% of my thyroid removed due to a questionable biopsy. I had nodules, Hashimoto's and cancer. My recovery has been quick and with medication, I feel great.  During my regular visit to the endocrinologist, a new and large nodule was detected in the remaining 40% of my thyroid.  With my past surgeryand the three thyroid conditions, I wonder if I should have the remaining 40% removed?  I am wondering what is the risk of the second surgery and what are some of the possible results post surgery.  I would welcome some of your experiences.

Did you try the Armour thyroid?

I don't know if this will help you but I was told by my surgeon that he was taking out my entire thyroid because in his experience within 10 years everyone that has a partial thyroidectomy returns to have the rest removed for one reason or another. He was just sparing me the second surgery. Frankly, I'm surprised they didn't take yours out completely the first time if there was cancer present. Hope this helps :)

I need to have my thyroid (partial) removed on upcoming Friday, 07/12 by radioactive iodine. I am 51 and still active playing soccer, going in gym and working out. All this makes me concerned. Particularly everything afterwards. When are you available to play soccer again after the thyroid removal? How long it takes to go back in the gym? Can you lift the weights ever again? Thanks

Hey Jenny, the way I see it, we got dealt a c**p hand a now we must play. I had a full thyrodectomy about 5 yrs ago, diagnosed with malignant (papilary cancer) and hashimoto. I changed doses a few times in the months that followed but ended up finding the right one and feeling normal. It will fluctuate throughout the rest of ur life (I am in the mist of a switch right now). Best advice, try to keep some humor to it. It will bring u down and sometimes I still ask "why me?" But there are also really good normal days. In perspective, as long as u take ur meds u will be as good as a thyroid owning person! You have to discipline urself to take your meds each day and listen to ur body. I'm trying to get pregnant now and my only fear is that I can't...there will always be some annoying after thought, but u have to keep going. If the surgery is a must, then at least u know that it's not all bad!

Hi barnettk..
:)

your post is such a help to me for my mother.
she just had her thyroid removed in this week.
since then she is feeling so weak, depressed, tired,
doctor says she needs psychological support more.. because the medication will gradually get in tune with her body demands. presently she is falling short of calcium and on calcium pills to supplement.
Hope everything gets in place as early as possible... as it did in your case.
Luckily her nodules are not cancerous.
Thanks..

I had 1/2 of my thyroid (right side) removed (August 2011) due to it had goidered (sp?) I haven't had my levels done in quite a few months - but I am not curious if something is going on - I woke up this morning and have a tightness on the right side and unable to swallow without horrible pain - my neck is also a little swallon (however its been "squishy" looking since surgery) I had hyperthyroid which was great I lost alot of weight - I've only put about 15 lbs back on which is fine as I'd lost around 60-70lbs in a VERY short time --- anyhow I am curious if anyone post surgery has had anything like this --- I don't want to call my doctors to set up an appointment as we're suppose to be going on vacation - but not being about to swallow without a knife feeling on the side of my neck --- and it is not a cold coming on - this I can feel something "rolling" down the side of my neck when I swallow along with the stabbing feeling - thank you
