Non-dissolvable stitches versus dissolvable for toe surgery. Which is better and leaves less scarrin

I had hammer toe surgery a week and half ago on two toes. The incisions are approx. 1/2" long and my doctor used non dissolvable stitches. Why would some use these type of stitches instead of dissolvable? Does it depend on the surgery and which one leaves less scarring?
