Why are there so many transgender now? Is this some kind of trend?

It seems as though it has become a trend to be trans now among boys and girls some starting as young as 8.Many programs I have read about seem too encourage this lifestyle.When I was 8 this would have never crossed my mind.Are these kids being brainwashed or is this a trend?
