Can hearing be damaged in Alport syndrome?

I am trying to find out more about the pathology of Alport syndrome. I understand that the hearing of a Alport syndrome patient can be damaged as a direct result of the disease. That surprised me somewhat. Is this true? And can anyone tell me more about the process in which this happens? Thanks.
