Lifting for a Distance runner

I'm a middle distance guy (800m and 1600m) and can be thrown into a 400m as well if needed. So I was wondering what muscle groups to hit? I had been told a distance runner needs a strong, powerful back, and abs and lower back are obviously important. What else?
