Is it normal for a girl to spot between periods

okaay i am 18 yrs of age yes i am sexually active .  So i have been light spotting between my periods with dark brown discharge without no odor for 8 months now. Is that normal ? . My periods has not change its still the same 'its just i have been light spotting between periods .

I came off the pill in December 2011 to start trying for a baby. For the first 6 months, everything was normal and I came on my period every month.However since June my period started skipping a month (I.e.: I came on in June, August, October)  Is this normal or do I need to see a doctor?!
