Left testicle hard and very tender, any ideas?

As of last week i had a very sharp pain run through my left testicle for about 3 minutes.. and then it went away. About 3 days later (I think), I noticed that said testicle was hard, and maybe a bit swollen.. but was tender to the touch. I havent been to have it checked yet, as i have no insurance.....
