I can't stop coughing!

Whenever I lay on my back to go to sleep, after 30 mins., or so I start to cough. I usually will turn to lay on my side, but it is so much more comfortable to sleep on your back. What can I do to stop coughing without taking any expectorants? Cough medicines really do not seem to help either.
