Weight loss as means to fight rheumatoid arthritis

Hi, folks. My mother has been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. She is also overweight and I think that she needs to lose weight a little bit more. Can a weight loss be a mean to fight rheumatoid arthritis? Does doctor recommend weight loss as a significant part of the treatment? Bye!
