Sudden swollen foot

My brother woke up one day and had a swollen foot. He didn't sprain his leg so we could not understand what had caused the swell. Is there any cause for concern? I'm afraid it is some major disease or illness that trigger the swelling.

purple hand a week after arm surgery

broken humeros surgery resulted with 8 screws in shoulder.  healing is good but top of hand and fingers are purplish in color and started to go away but stopped leaving hand and fingers light purple up to the knuckles.  I i can move all fingers well/  please explain.
