Abnormal kidney functions due to diabetes

I am working with a lady with type 1, or insulin dependant, diabetes and recently she has had abnormal kidney functions due to her diabetes as well. Can anyone tell me more about this and about the reasons this happens? I would love to be able to help her in some way, but I really don't know how.
