Can there be an association between shortness of breath and GERD (gastroesophageal reflux)?

My sister-in-law has experienced both shortness of breath without any exertion and chronic reflux. She has had her heart checked and that is fine. She does not have asthma, is not overweight. The shortness of breath appears occasionally without an apparent cause.
