how effective are birth control pills

I'm just curious because every month I find my self wondering just how effective oral contaceptive is? I've been on it for 6 years and take it at the same time every night. My boyfriend uses pull out method also, but why do you still hear horror stories of girls becoming pregnant while on the pill?
