Septic shock because of the pelvis injury

I am so afraid for my husband! He is in the hospital where he is resting after the pelvis surgery. He had a serious fracture of that bone and it seems like everything is ok, although the doctors mentioned some danger because of the septic shock? What is that actually? Is he safe?
