Any advise on a broken collar bone and 5 broken ribs? I am in week 2 and would like to know if anyone has had a similar experience. Pain is in back, (I think due to costo chondritas) ribs, collar bone, and sternum. It was a pretty good fall. How long do you take pain meds? I have been on lortabs for 2 weeks and when I try to go without, the pain is fairley bad. Anyone had the collarbone fixed with a plate?
Thanks,
Tom

Hi, as far as I know, the plate fixation is performed only if the fracture i.e two ends of broken bone don’t grow (reunite) properly or don’t reunite at all. It takes about two weeks for these ends to come closer to each other so that the fibrous tissue could form around them and start turning into bone.
The initial treatment is to do nothing and wait for the natural process to take place. During that time pain should be relieved by pain killers and the arm should be kept in a sling to allow good reunion of the broken bone’s two ends.
The whole healing and recovery process may take two to three months.
