Fosamax in osteoporosis treatment

After my menopause my doctor told me that I must take care of my bone. It is somehow hormonally related, but not important right now. So, he gave me Fosamax for osteoporosis treatment or prevention. My question is how can this work if I take only one pill each week? This is by doctors orders.
