How is herpes zoster manifested on the skin?

I need some info regarding herpes zoster. How is that condition manifested on the skin? A friend claims that he has it, although there is just some mild rash on his skin and that is all. I have told him that he should see a doctor but he says that it will pass in time. Is that really possible?
