Broken Surgical Screws in Neck

I had a ruptured disc removed in 2005 and everything went well. I just had x-rays and an MRI, x-ray shows 2 broken screws, MRI shows another ruptured disc and bone spurs. I am going to a neurosurgeon on 3/16/10. My question is how can you break surgical screws?
